1 July 2018. A World to Win News Service. The late June meeting of European Union country leaders may well mark a dangerous turning point. The vagueness and lack of detail in their signed agreement, and the secrecy surrounding the heated night-long joint session, are not just a reflection of unresolved clashes about how the accord could be implemented. They are also an attempt to cloak the radical and threatening change represented by what they seem to have agreed. That noise growing louder as if some future cataclysm were growing nearer is the slamming shut of borders, the clanging of prison doors and the nailing of coffins.
11 June 2018.. A World to Win News Service. The new Italian government’s opening salvo was to order that the country’s ports be closed to an NGO ship carrying 629 people rescued from the Mediterranean, about 100 of them children. This demonstrated just what the slogan “Italians first” really means.
2 June 2018. A World to Win News Service. France enjoyed a feel-good moment when President Emannuel Macron held a much-publicized meeting with Mamoudou Gassama and promised citizenship to the young Malian living and working in Paris without papers. A video viewed by millions had shown him climbing up the outside of an apartment building to rescue a toddler dangling by one hand from a high balcony.
25 May 2018. A World to Win News Service. Abridged excerpts from an extensive pamphlet put out by the Revolutionary Communist Organization (OCR), Mexico, in view of the national general elections to be held in July. Much of the pamphlet is an exposure of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, long the standard-bearer of the traditional left and now considered the leading candidate, who promises to “democratize” a state that has earned widespread and intense discredit and hatred. It also explains how the electoral system serves to legitimate the rule of the big capitalists and landlords and Mexico’s domination by imperialism. These excerpts focus on the polemic against the Zapatistas, who led an armed peasant uprising in the southern state of Chiapas in 1994 before entering into an uneasy coexistence with Mexico’s governments since then. We made this choice because of the international influence of that trend and the thinking it represents among radical-minded people in many countries. 4 May 2018. A World to Win News Service. In what they call “the Great March of Return”, tens of thousands of Palestinian refugees forced to live in Gaza have been braving Israeli gunfire to demonstrate near the fences that imprison them every Friday during the weeks leading up to 15 May. That day, Nakba Day, commemorates a turning point in the mass expulsion of Palestinians from their homes, about 250,000 in the months before 15 May 1948, when the state of Israel was proclaimed, and as many as 750,000 more by the end of that year.
18 April 2018. A World to Win News Service. Lula (Luiz Ignacio da Silva), the Brazilian ex-head of state U.S. President Obama once called “the most popular politician on Earth”, is now in prison serving a twelve-year sentence for accepting the renovation of an ocean-front apartment placed at his disposal by a contractor.
9 March 2018. A World to Win News Service. The results of the Italian parliamentary elections are as alarming as they are grotesque. Grotesque in that the two parties that fared the best, splitting the electorate between them, the fascist League and the “libertarian” Five Star Movement, two apparent opposites, are united against immigration. Alarming because they demonstrate how quickly a violent, racist, fascistic mood can descend on a Western country, catching even many of its own people by surprise.
4 February 2018. A World to Win News Service. Poland’s parliament has passed a bill criminalizing the use of the term “Polish death camps” to refer to Auschwitz and other concentration camps located in Poland where about three million Jews and as many as three million other people were killed during World War 2. This law is a serious step in Poland’s march toward implementing fascism. At the same time, the widespread condemnation of this law has been marked by falsification and hypocrisy on a grand scale. The U.S., Israeli and other governments have condemned it only to further their own murderous objectives.
20 January 2018. A World to Win News Service. By Sam Albert. Demonstrations and fighting broke out across Tunisia for about ten days in January in the most important flare-up of popular anger since the toppling of the Ben Ali regime seven years ago. These events are all the more significant in that Western representatives and apologists for the current state of the world have held up Tunisia’s political situation as the most successful outcome of the 2011 “Arab Spring” – “successful”, that is, from the point of view of maintaining the status quo. Actually, this explosion of anger shows that the underlying factors driving that popular revolt in multiple Arab countries are still at work – factors also visible in the similar recent events in Iran.
8 January 2018. A World to Win News Service. Ex-Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori has been pardoned after serving a decade of a 25-year sentence for corruption and murder – the massacres he personally ordered in a terror campaign against a revolutionary war aimed at liberating Peru from oppression. This decision produced widespread indignation and angry street protests. It not only brought more widespread hate on an already discredited government, but extended that discredit to the country’s so-called rule of law. What throws an even sharper light on the criminal injustice of this pardon is that Abimael Guzman (also known as Chairman Gonzalo), the head of the Communist Party of Peru (PCP) who led that revolution, remains buried alive in a solitary cell after 25 years, condemned to die there even though a life sentence is not considered legal in Peru. The country continues to hold dozens of political prisoners, some still incarcerated even after having served their sentences.
5 January 2018. A World to Win News Service. The Iranian regime has been shaken by a week of intense and often violent protests in as many as 80 cities and towns all across the country. Unlike the last political upheaval in 2009, when many urban, middle class demonstrators sided with so-called reformist factions within the regime, this time the people taking to the streets, overwhelmingly young men, were mainly from poor and lower-middle class neighbourhoods, often on the outskirts of urban areas where many have arrived from the countryside over the last decade. The regime has considered such people a key part of its social base, or at least counted on them to keep silent. Yet what has most marked this movement is the way it has targeted the whole regime and the Islamic Republic itself, including all of its factions.
11 December 2017. A World to Win News Service. The following is the text of the opening talk given at Refuse Fascism mass meetings around the country. It is being reprinted and distributed by the AWTW News Service because of its importance for summing up the critical situation in the US in the battle to drive out the Trump/Pence fascist regime, and because of the lessons it offers for struggles in many other places facing similar challenges.
11 December 2017. A World to Win News Service. U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that the U.S. would recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital has been seen by too many people as “ego driven” or otherwise irrational, an attempt to distract from his roiling political and legal challenges. This is a misreading of an extremely dangerous situation. There is ample evidence that the Trump regime had planned this move long before his current political troubles. In fact, it was another of his campaign promises that too few liberals took seriously.
A World to Win News Service for 5 December 2017 contains two articles – one on the Trump-Pence regime, including a short excerpt from a speech by Bob Avakian and some glimpses of the struggle to drive out that regime, including a separate PDF file of images from the 4 November protests; and another article from Mexico.
29 November 2017. A World to Win News Service. Surprise and shock rattled all of Europe when the AfD (Alternative for Germany) more than doubled its previous score in the September federal elections and entered the German parliament. Unfortunately, many people saw this turn of events as an anomaly in a self-correcting system. How could fascists have deep and durable appeal in a country they already brought to disaster in World War 2? The four parties that have governed Germany in various combinations since the War had held out hope that by making concessions to AfD’s anti-immigration demands, they could undercut AfD’s appeal, shore up the political centre and prevent further polarisation.
